Shakira, the Grammy-winning Colombian singer and a global music sensation, has been commemorated in her iconic belly-dancing pose through a towering bronze statue in her hometown of Barranquilla. Mayor Jaime Pumarejo unveiled the 6.5-meter (21-foot) sculpture in a riverside park on Tuesday, accompanied by the singer’s parents.
Crafted by artist Yino Marquez, the statue symbolizes empowerment, inspiring countless girls to pursue their aspirations. Pumarejo reminisced about watching Shakira perform at local children’s concerts, emphasizing how her journey motivates others to achieve their dreams.
The sculpture depicts the singer’s signature long, curly hair as she gracefully dances, adorned in a sheer skirt embellished with shiny aluminum accents.
A plaque accompanying the statue praises Shakira’s accomplishments, including her recent win of three 2023 Latin Grammy Awards, and acknowledges her charity work through “Pies descalzos” (Spanish for “bare feet”), focusing on early childhood development.

The inscription reads, “A heart that composes, hips that tell the truth, unrivaled talent, a voice that moves the masses, and feet that march for the betterment of children and humanity.”
Expressing her gratitude, Shakira, who resides in Miami, conveyed through a statement from the mayor’s office that she feels honored by the statue and considers Barranquilla forever her home.
